    I remember watching this film back in 2022, and feeling relieved that our world hadn't become like that in 'Soylent Green'. I'm taking a break from watching this this early morning, and wanted to see other's opinions about it. You gave a pretty good overview, Joshua, and sounds like you enjoy good sci-fi, too! There are so many science-fiction films out there, great and not-so-great, but I'd have to say my favorites are the first two 'Planet of the Apes' sagas, from 1968 and 1970. I've often wanted to see 'Alphaville' from 1965, but I just don't think I could sit through it w/all that French language! Makes me wish I had taken up another foreign tongue when I was back in school! Anyways, "Thanks" for your input concerning this legendary sci-fi classic.

    James Earl Jones mentioned in the documentary available on the second dvd in the Criterion Collection set that his role in Matewan was his favorite film role. The character Few Clothes was based on an actual miner named Dan Chain who fought for the Union in the 1912-1913 mine wars in Kanawha county, WV. He went by Few Clothes. When John Sayles was writing the script and wrote the character he kept saying he wanted a James Earl Jones type actor for the role. None of the people he auditioned didn’t fit the role so he and Maggie Renzi Decided to reach out to Jones to determine his interest.

    I really didn’t like this one very much at all. I thought all the studio-mandated cuts made this feel so choppy and underdeveloped, though of course, I appreciate the direction from Welles and the performances, along with this review! And I’d have to say my favorite film with flaws has to be Who Killed Captain Alex 😂😂😂 Thanks for the review, Joshua!

    When Kellermen was going to sue all those people, I figured that #1 would be ground control at Kennedy Airport for putting them in a holding pattern, and not letting them land before the fog set in, shutting down the airport, sending them to Boston. #2 would be the baggage handlers in Boston when they could not find their luggage. #3 would be the train company for not having enough food to feed everyone, especially because they were out of food by the time they got seats in the dining car. #4 would be their hotel for not holding their room. Maybe #5 would be the City of New York itself for having a transit strike, if so, #6 would be the NYPD, if he did not get his money and wallet back, and the mugger was not behind bars by the next morning. The very last lawsuit might be the airline they were flying on going back home, for allowing hijackers on board, who hijacked them to Cuba. Of course, when he found out that their luggage never got put on the plane in Ohio, he would realize that the baggage handlers in Boston could not be blamed for that, and drop the lawsuit against them. If he had sued everyone that he threatened to sue, one case he might lose would be trying to sue the bus company in New York for putting them off because he couldn't pay the fare.

    This is a great movie that was not successful. I think it was a bit too cynical for 1951 audiences. There are no completely pure characters that audiences could identify with. Perhaps a few minor characters, Boot, Leo’s parents, and Father Diego, had pure intentions. Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling took risks playing fairly rotten people. Everyone is cast well, including Richard Benedict as the doomed Leo. As to whether it is a Film Noir, that is a difficult call. Film Noir was a style of filmmaking rather than a genre. The moral ambiguity of the main characters qualifies it in my opinion.

    I’ve been watching this movie first on Chicago’s WGN back in the 1960’s. It’s I still think the best ghost story ever put on film. Everything works with the chemistry between great actors and screenplay along with the b&w use of shadows and soundtrack makes this film one of the best. I still get frightened watching alone at night! When Gail Russell was found dead from alcoholism she had called in the local radio station to play her favorite “Stella By Starlight”. A beautiful but still haunting song

      Wings is such a fantastic film! There are so many creative camera shots and incredible flying sequences that blew me away when I first saw it! If you haven’t seen them already, I’d definitely recommend any number of other films made by the director, William A. Wellman! Awesome review! This is such a great movie, one of my favorites. The music is fantastic and I really wish it would be made into a stage show. I'd go see the hell out of it. And the love story is so beautiful! When it comes to the original book and most adaptations of it, I'm like, "Christine should either go off with Raoul or better yet, ditch both men and go on to have a fabulous opera career instead." But this film? Winslow and Phoenix forever. Not only as a couple are they a genuinely sweet take on the pairing of the Phantom and Christine, they're portrayed as soulmates who are so in love they keep reincarnating across time to find each other, which is a romance trope I absolutely adore.

    Excellent review and points of discussion. Pamela Franklin, Meg Jenkins, and Michael Redgrave are also excellent in their respective parts. Deborah Kerr is at the top of her game, and Martin Stephens is mesmerizing. As you stated he seems so much more adult at times but also is very childlike. His soliloquy is frightening, his physical movements and delivery are superb. My other two favorite vintage ghost fims are The Haunting, 1963 and The Uninvited 1944. The Innocents is my favorite.

But I keep going back to the original 1953 classic, The Day The Earth Stood Still! I can just watch that over and over again with its anti-nuclear message. Yes you're right, everyone SHOULD see this movie. It's great. And not to brag, BUT...Over twenty some years ago I got to watch this WITH, (sitting a few seats from me by the 16mm projector) Kevin McCarthy! He stopped the film once in a while to talk about a scene or two. It was great. The one thing that sticks in my mind was that his part was written FOR him. The producers and writer felt he was the only one who could make this believable. So he left NYC to CA to film it, in just a couple weeks. Then he went back to his theatre work in NYC. Months later they called him to come to the opening. He had no idea what they were talking about. He was so busy he forgot he even filmed the movie!!

    • @JoshuaSutlive
      @JoshuaSutlive 3 месяца назад

      Wow! What a cool experience! I remember reading that he was a pretty successful stage actor at the time appearing in several Shakespeare plays and was even nominated for an Oscar in the film version of Death of a Salesman so I’m sure he just saw this as just another job at the time. I also remember reading that his costar, Dana Wynter, was initially quite embarrassed to be in it after learning the film was going to be called Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It’s funny to think that this little film which nobody expected much from has become such a classic that its still watched and talked about nearly seventy years later!
